This week is Mental Health Awareness week, and the theme for 2023 is Anxiety.
Anxiety is a normal emotion for all of us, but sometimes it can get out of control and become overwhelming. Anxiety can affect us in many ways, including physical symptoms such as getting lightheaded and dizzy. It is important to be aware of these symptoms, and learn ways of how we can help ourselves when we are struggling.
Yesterday, Portt launched it’s new Wellbeing programme for its employees, offering a monthly Time to Talk session with our newly appointed Wellbeing Ambassador/MHFAider, and a monthly group yoga session, amongst many other things.
Here are some top tips from Portt for Wellbeing and Mental Health:
1. Learning to set boundaries can be a valuable skill that helps you heal and enriches your relationships in the future. Boundaries help us be aware of ourselves and our relationships. They’re important for self-care and making yourself a priority.
2. People with good nature connectedness tend to be happier. Nature can generate many positive emotions, such as calmness, joy, and creativity and can facilitate concentration. Nature connectedness is also associated with lower levels of poor mental health, particularly lower depression and anxiety.
3. Sleep is an essential and involuntary process, without which we cannot function effectively. It is as essential to our bodies as eating, drinking and breathing, and is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. Sleeping helps to repair and restore our brains, not just our bodies.
4. Creativity can reduce stress and improve mental health. Being creative may also reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, and can help us express or manage our emotions in a positive and productive way. Especially when those feelings are difficult to put into words.
5. Physical activity is not only good for your body, but it’s also great for your mind. Being active releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good – boosting your self-esteem and helping you concentrate as well as sleep well and feel better.
6. Strong ties with family, friends and the community provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. Being connected to others is important for our mental and physical wellbeing and can be a protective factor against anxiety and depression.
7. Reflecting allows you to dedicate time to not only improve your circumstances and nurture your wellbeing, but also consider new opportunities – paths you hadn’t realised were open to you or opportunities that you are yet to take advantage of.
8. Research supports that having a sense of purpose is connected to mental health in a fundamental way; data suggests people who have a sense of purpose live longer.
